The Ranger Saddle, also called the California Saddle, was produced early in
the war and was used by numerous Union units when McClellans were difficult
to obtain. It was requested by the 2nd Kansas Calvary (US). There
is also a picture of a Federal cavalryman in Echos of Glory, Arms and
Equipment of the Union (p.69), riding what appears to be a ranger saddle.
This saddle is also similar to descriptions of a Confederate saddle that was
produced by the Atlanta Arsenal.
Our saddle has short harness leather skirts with steel rings, staples, and footman stands.
This one is styled from a picture of an 8th Tennessee (US) cavalry saddle.
